My Quests in Life

Life. The contiguous two answering beats of the heart. The eupneic of air through the narrow parting of the lips. A multitude of flashes captured by the eye. Life is about living, but very few people really live it. To actually live it, you must have the wish to live it which is the quintessential element everyone must possess. There is so MUCH to do in life! How can one say there’s nothing to do or I have done enough in my life? I have become irritated of hearing from my friends and acquaintances so often that they had nothing to do during their holidays, or they got bored to death during their free time. Sometimes you do get tired of the world due to your continuous indulgence but that doesn’t justify your answer of ‘getting bored’ or ‘nothing’ to the question ‘Wassup?’ and ‘What are you doing these days?’ all the time.

Probably my best 2 min book reads. This short ebook tries to use the chicken and egg analogy to answer the ultimate question of life, the universe, and everything; which is quite powerful and can get you thinking in just few hundred words.

I couldn’t have picked a more perfect book to start the year 2023!

Project Hail Mary has all the basic constructs of a simple yet compelling sci-fi story: an impending catastrophe, a need for mankind to conduct intergalactic travel, science and engineering applied in interesting life-threatening situations and a flurry of emotions.

An immersive short audiobook with outstanding environment creation through the audio media with amazing sound effects.

The production team of this audiobook have outdone themselves in helping listeners visualize the scenes being narrated in the story and it’s not easy to create a horror audiobook as most of the fear factor comes from visual aid in humans.

The story of the book is short, engaging, succinct and have the right surprises to awe the listeners. I recommend a listen if you’re into Warhammer or want to immerse just a toenail into its universe.

Andrzej Sapkowski finally did disappoint me with the poor finale. Honestly, it has been a downhill read after the first books with the story taking more and more political arcs without sticking to the original Witchering. The ending and large parts of The Lady of the Lake is too superficial in my opinion without any logical or captivating explanations.

I guess the only thing which made me stick through finishing the entire series was Geralt’s and Dandelion’s companionship and occasional humorous exchanges.

Finally, the plot picks up in this book after a long drag and hiatus in The Time of Contempt & The Baptism of Fire. This book continues on the unique Sapkowski tradition which began in The Time of Contempt of beginning, repeating and ending with a riddle or catchphrase which subtly hints the plot thesis of that book and this time the riddle, regarding the mirror like lake, with which The Tower of the Swallow ends also forms the title of next book The Lady of the Lake.

Monsters and the Witcher killing them for coin, has now long phased out and replaced with politics, war and Ithlinne’s prophecy about Child of the Elder blood and the world’s destruction as main themes in the Witcher books. While I miss the monster hunting tales, I nevertheless continue reading/listening to get a closure on the fate of the dear White Wolf (Geralt) and the Chosen One (Ciri).

This book fares better than its predecessor The Time of Contempt, as in, atleast some action or events takes place in the story. I really liked the storytelling and there are many moments where I chuckled at the sarcastic but humorous exchanges between Geralt (protagonist of the series) and his companion Dandelion and the author’s narration.

But plot wise, this book is also a drag just like the The Witcher, #2 which dampened a little bit of my spirits, as sequentially, this is actually book 5 out of 8 series Witcher books, where one might expect a thickening plot and fast progressing story. 1 star off for this reason.

The Time of Contempt by Andrzej Sapkowski

Well, I’m on the fence on this one. This is a difficult book to review as it has few unique styles being put forward like the book starting with a riddling line which the story ends with, while what makes it bad is none of the original lore that sets The Witcher to stand out are used in this book – no monster hunts, just one boring monster description over sea, not many short stories; mostly long rants.

This book’s focus in on politics, war, socio-political issues and long monologues. Not on monster hunting, short story telling, Geralt’s scruples.

Hopefully, Sapkowski has better story arc in store in the The Baptism of Fire.

Blood of Elves begins with the main storyline of Princess Cirilla – the child of Elder blood. Unlike its predecessors, this book’s chapters are more co-related which makes them a bit dull compared to the short stories format in the previous books, which were quick and more juicy. This book also contains less monsters and more politics, trying to establish the stage for the looming war against Nilfgaard.

Much like the Witcher #0.5 The Last Wish, Sword of Destiny continues to lay the character foundations in the form of short tales which are incredibly fun to read because of the right amount of action, drama, story arc and of-course nefarious monsters. These story chapters would later go on to add substance and depth to the story narratives.
